Methods

There are several methods available for determining the green density of components:

Measuring the volume of Hg displaced by the sample (this has well-known disadvantages of handling mercury)
Measuring the volume of a fine-grained powder required to embed the sample.
Calculating the density of an irregularly shaped body by measuring the buoyancy of the solid in a well-known liquid (Archimedes principle).
The green density measurement of porous bodies is somewhat more complicated, and is usually carried out by covering the sample with wax. The wax prevents the penetration of the liquid into the porous solid. Wax-covering is a time consuming method, however, and only applicable for completely dry bodies.
All these methods are only of limited use for practical applications in industry due to the time-consuming, complicated measuring procedures and the low precision.

Methods

densitec
is a density measurement system for porous and non-porous samples, based on a newly developed measurement and calculation algorithm, allowing densities to be measured to a precision of 10-3 g/cm3.
densitec offers a precise and user-friendly density measurement solution, working with samples ranging from 1 to 180 g. A wide range of special performance features and in-device computation algorithms makes densitec ideal for use as measuring and test equipment in quality departments, as well as in industrial laboratories.
These practical features include:

Fully automatic self-calibration and adjustment function (time and temperature dependent)
ISO-compliant recording capability for printouts

Facts and figures

In ceramic materials in particular, many properties are heavily dependent on the green density. The exact and fast measurement of this value is therefore essential in order to meet quality targets and specifications. In many cases, there is a direct connection between the density of green ceramic components and their final functional properties (see figure on top).

The importance of the intermediate examination becomes clear. It is an irreplaceable instrument for saving time and cost. You will successfully qualify your processes by monitoring your product properties.
With our new green density equipment densitec we meet all the requirements regarding material compatibility, the order of porosity and the sample size. And it doesn’t take long!
